Book Description
Bagdad, grande métropole du monde arabo-musulman médiéval et siège du califat abbasside, fut au milieu du Ve/Xie siècle intégrée à l’empire oriental des Turcs seldjoukides. Restaurateurs du sunnisme, les sultans seldjoukides résidèrent peu à Bagdad, mais ils y fondèrent des institutions nouvelles : les madrasas, encouragèrent l’essor du soufisme et participèrent au développement urbain.
Cette étude d’histoire sociale, fondée sur une approche prosopographique des sources arabes, décrit différents groupes élitaires bagdadiens et s’intéresse à leur fonctionnement (distinction, reproduction, rôle des lignages). À travers l’apparition de nouvelles élites administratives et militaires au service des Abbassides, elle retrace le phénomène progressif de redressement califal qui marqua le Vie/XIIe siècle. L’étude du cadre urbain fait apparaître Bagdad comme une ville en évolution permanente, marquée par l’interaction constante des élites avec le contexte urbain dont elles étaient issues.
