يعمل "شيز" في المهام السرية التي تكلفه بها المخابرات الحربية الأمريكية. وفي إحدى المهام في "كوستاريكا" بـ"أمريكا الوسطى" كلف بإنقاذ مجموعة من العلماء الأمريكيين، ولكنه ورفاقه يفشلون عندما يقتل المتمردون هؤلاء العلماء. وينجح هو في إنقاذ صبية في السادسة عشرة من عمرها ولكن يقع له حادث انقلاب سيارة وهو في طريق الهروب ويفقد الذاكرة. وفي المستشفى يخبره زملاؤه بأن الفتاة قتلت أيضاً. ويصاب بصدمة نفسية تجعله يعتزل العالم والعاصمة بعد هجوم الصحافة عليه. بعد خمس سنوات يفاجأ بوصول امرأة تدّعي أنها زوجته التي زوجها له قس في "كوستاريكا" حتى تكتسب الجنسية الأمريكية، وتستطيع الهروب من الشرطة والمتمردين وهذه الزوجة هي الفتاة التي أنقذها وادعى زملاؤه أنها قتلت..
