أخترت دراسة وظيفة نفسية تتجلى فيها النفس ككل: ولم أجد وظيفة تفي بهذا الغرض أحسن من وظيفة الآنتباه الإرادي. ومن الواجب أن لا ننسى أن التقسيم الشائع للنفس إلى قوى وملكات هو تقسيم تعليمي اصطناعي نلجأ إليه للضرورة كما يلجأ العالم الطبيعي أو الكيميائي إلى التحليل لفهم جسم طبيعي. وهذه الوظيفة في الاختيار وفي تبأور الشعور إذ لولا الانتباه لما كان الشعور وتدخل أيضا في التفكير ونستطيع ان نفيهم بها الفرق بين اليقطة والنوم، وبين الأحلام والإدراك الحقيقي ويلقى لنا البحث في الانتباه ضوءا على الذاكرة التى هى انتباه داخلي او ارتكاز الشعور على حالة شعورية ماضية وتميزها عن غيرها من الحلاات الشعورية الماضية والحالية وبدارستنا للأنتباه الإداري نتعرض إلى سر الإرادة والشخصية.
