في الرواية تجربة إنسانيَة فريدة تجمع الجمال إلى القبح. وتحمل مضامين كبرى عن العاطفة; عن التسامي والتضحية والحُبَ، عن الأحقاد والكراهية والانتقام. وهي واحدة من أشهر الروايات الرومانسيَة، لما تصوَره من عاطفة قوبة تحرَكها الغجرية في قلوب الجميع لا سيما قارع الأجراس في كاتدرائية نوتردام والكاهن إنَها تراجيديا رائعة من القرون الوسطى عن الأقدار المشؤومة وسلطة الكنيسة، تدور أحداثها في عهد لويس الحادي عشر، ومسرحها تحفة معماريَة. ترنَ في أركان الكاتدرائية الأجراس والمصائر.
يتوغل فيكتور هيغو في روايته، عميقا في عالم المشردين والمهمشين، وحتى الأسياد المنكسرين على أنفسهم أمام عالم يسوس فيه الظلم، ويعربد فيه المنافقون باسم التدين. ينتصر الكاتب الشاعر في هذا العمل للعاطفة الإنسانية كدافع جوهري لكل حراك اجتماعي يتوق للتحرر والانعتاق، فكأنما أحداث نوتردام في أواخر العصر الوسيط هذه، هي التي مهدت لبواكير الثورة الفرنسية في أواخر القرن 18، والتي أرخ لها فيكتور هيغو، في رائعته “البؤساء”.
نجح هيغو، من خلال هذه الرواية ذات الأحداث الآسرة، في حياكة قصة حب متشظية بين شخصيات تائهة، ولامس معادلة صعبة المنال وملتبسة المفاهيم، وهي مبنية على العلاقة بين ظاهر الشخصية وباطنها، بين قبح خارجي وجمال داخلي، وتؤسس لمفهوم فلسفي شديد التعقيد، وهو سؤال الجمال وعلاقته بالصالح والنفعي، وما يجب أن يكون.
