تتطلَّب الحياة منَّا اتِّخاذ القرارات، وكي تكون صحيحة، لا بدَّ أن تتحلَّى بأكبر قدر من الموضوعية. لكن، ما الموضوعية؟ وإلى أيِّ حدٍّ يمكن تحقيقها؟ حتى نكون موضوعيين، علينا أن نتأمل آراءنا بنوع من الحياد، لا أن نجعلها منطلق أحكامنا. ولا غنىً لنا، في هذا الصدد، عن التجرُّد من التحيُّز والتحامل، فهما يجعلان الحكم أميل إلى تغليب المصالح والأهواء الشخصية، عوضاً عن أن يكون مجرداً من الهوى والافتراضات المسبقة. وبناءً على ذلك، يتعيَّن أن تكون النظريات والآراء والمعتقدات مستخلَصةً من دراسة عميقة، ومبنيَّةً على أدلَّة قطعيَّة، وبذلك يغدو الباحث متجرداً من عواطفه وانفعالاته. لكنَّ مؤلف الكتاب يتساءل: هل ثمة تصوُّر واحد للموضوعية، أم أنَّها تعتمد على السياق والظرف؟ وهو يجيب قائلاً: لا تصوُّر واحداً للموضوعية، بحكم الاختلاف في تعريفها أصلاً. فثمة قائل إنَّها التجرُّد من التحيُّز والتحامل، وثمة من يقول إنَّها توخِّي الحقيقة، وثمة قائل إنَّ اختلاف الأوضاع والسياقات يجعل الوصول إلى الموضوعية مستحيلاً.
