وضعت هذا الكتاب فى مبادئ اللغة المصرية القديمة باللغة العربية لأسهل درسها لجميع طبقات الامة، لاسيما المولعين بمعرفة الاشارات المنقوشة على جعران حجر أثرى أو المكتوبة على الورق البردى.
فتح لنا شامبليون منذ قرن المغلق من اللغة المصرية القديمة، فوقفنا على كثير من النقوش التاريخية والشعرية وغيرها، فلذا افتتحت كتابى بصورته ولمحة من سيرته اقراراً بفضله، وشرعت حكومتنا السنية فى اقامته تمثال له تخليداً لذكره بيننا.
تنوعت خطوط اللغة المصرية القديمة فى خلال اربعة الاف سنة وكثرت لهجاتها، ففتحت لها ابواباً بينت فيها كيف كان اضمحلالها واكتشافها، وذكرت أغلب اشارتها وأهم قواعدها، مقتبسها من كتابي العالميين الاثريين سوتاس ودريوتون.
وتتميماً للفائدة وضعت فى هذا الكتاب فصولا فى اللغة القبطية التى هى مفتاح اللغة المصرية القديمة، وجئت فيها بأهم قواعدها مقتبسها من الاجرومية القبطية لجناب العلامة صاحب الفضيلة الاب الكسيس مالون استاذى المبجل، وخصصت بابا للغة العبرية المرتبطة باللغة المصرية القديمة.
