L’ouvrage auquel Gabriel Saadé, lui-même Syrien de Lattaquié, avait consacré de longues années constitue une somme indispensable sur une page essentielle de l’histoire de la Syrie antique, à qui l’on doit en particulier le premier alphabet à la fin du Iie millénaire av. J.-C. Une actualisation nécessaire de l’ouvrage (Marguerite Yon) depuis la disparition de son auteur signale les travaux menés depuis 1997 et les nouveaux résultats acquis.
Sur un site (Ras Shamra) occupé depuis le Néolithique, la cité d’Ougarit était à la fin de l’âge du Bronze la capitale d’un royaume situé entre Méditerranée et Jabal al-Ansariyé (mohafazat de Lattaquié). À partir des résultats archéologiques obtenus par la mission française depuis 1929 en collaboration avec la Direction des Antiquités de Syrie, et d’une considérable production internationale d’ouvrages scientifiques, le livre de G.S. Décrit de façon synthétique la brillante civilisation d’Ougarit jusqu’à sa disparition brutale au début XIIe s. Av. J.-C. : origines, histoire et relations avec les civilisations qui l’entourent (Mésopotamie, Hatti, Levant, Égypte, Chypre, Crète, Grèce mycénienne…), nombreux documents écrits en plusieurs langues, progrès techniques, productions artistiques… Une dernière partie élargit la recherche à tout le royaume – ce qui n’avait jamais été tenté – et présente les autres sites explorés sur le territoire ougaritien.
Cet ouvrage de référence s’adresse à tous ceux qu’intéresse l’histoire du Proche Orient.
