محمد بن علاء الدين, أبو عبد الله شمس الدين البابلي, القاهري, الأزهري, الشافعي, الحافظ الرّحلة, أحد الأعلام في الحديث والفقه, وأحفظ أهل عصره لمتون الأحاديث, وأعرفهم بجرحها ورجالها, وصحيحها وسقيمها, وكان شيوخه وأقرانه يعترفون له بذلك. وكان إماماً زاهداً ورعاً, بركة من بركات الزمان, حكي أنه رأى ليلة القدر ودعا بأشياء منها أن يكون مثل ابن حجر العسقلاني في الحديث, فكان حافظاً نبيهاً ما وقع نظره قبل انكفافه على شيءٍ إلا وحفظه بديهاً.
وهذا الكتاب عبارة عن ثبته الذي أثبت فيه مؤلفه وتلميذه الشيخ عيسى الثعالبي قراءته وسماعه عن شيوخه كما ذكر تراجمهم وأخبارهم وآثارهم.
