شهاب الدين النويري هو المؤرخ الكبير شهاب الدين أحمد بن عبد الوهّاب بن محمد النويري، نسبة إلى قرية النويرة بمحافظة بني سويف. ولد سنة 677هـ، ودرس في القاهرة وأزهرها، وتخصص نوعاً ما في دراسة الحديث والسير والتاريخ، واشتغل في مقتبل عمره بنسخ الكتب الجليلة نظراً لجمال خطه، حيث كان يكتب النسخة من صحيح البخاري ويبيعها بألف دينار، اتصل النويري بالسلطان الناصر محمد بن قلاوون، ونال حظوته، ومارس لديه الكتابة والحسبة والمقايسات وباشر جيش طرابلس لفترة مما كان له كبير الأثر في توسيع مداركه ومعارفه. وقد رحل النويري سنة 733هـ عن عمر يناهز 65 عام وعشرة شهور. قدم النويري للثقافة الإنسانية موسوعته الكبرى نهاية الأرب في فنون الأدب التي أخرج الجزء الأول منها في ذى القعدة 721هـ.و تشتمل الموسوعة على خمسة فنون :
هذه الأقسام الأربعة تشغل عشرة مجلدات. أما القسم الخامس وهو التاريخ، فيشغل واحداً وعشرين مجلداً، ذاك أن النويري في الأساس مؤرخٌ عظيم، وقد سرد فيه تاريخ الإنسانية بدءاً من أبى البشر أدم مروراً بالأنبياء حتى سيد الرسل محمد ومراحل التاريخ الإسلامى المتعددة.

هذا هو الجزء الثالث والأخير من مختصر كتاب الأرب ويضم هذا الجزء ابتداء من تاريخ خلفاء الدولة العباسية والحوادث التى جرت أيامهم وهو في نسخة الأصل ابتداء من المجلد الثالث والعشرين وحتى المجلد الأخير الثالث والثلاثين. وبهذا يكون قد تم اختصار هذه الموسوعة الكبرى (نهاية الأرب فن فنون الأدب) للنويرى وقد استطاعت هذه الأجزاء الثلاثة آن تلم بأطرافها، وتقف عند بعض حوادثها وأحداثها فى تفاصيل تشير لنا أن النويرى لم يكن مؤرخا فيما وقف عنده من التاريخ بل كان أديبا وشاهدا على العصر، وواحداً من المثقفين الأمناء على تاريخ بلده.
