"ركض علي سبع مرات خلال اليوم جيئة وذهابًا ما بين الفسطاط والقاهرة. تفادى الاصطدام بالعربات التي تجرها الحمير وبأكوام القمامة والكلاب الضالة. قام بتوصيل عشرات الرسائل من يهود الفسطاط لإخوتهم في الدين وشركائهم في العمل وأنصارهم الآخرين في أرجاء المدينة. حمل علي الرسائل لأصحاب الدكاكين والقضاة والتجار والكهنة. عبر من خلال أزقة خلفية عفنة التمعت فيها مياه الصرف وانزلق داخلًا من أسفل البوابات المغلقة وتسلل عبر الساحات الظليلة للقصور الكبيرة. وصَّل الرسائل للكنيسة المعلقة ولسوق صانعي الزجاج ولحديقة كافور وللدهاليز الداخلية السرية للأزهر. في يوم واحد رأى علي من مدينته التي وُلِد بها أكثر مما رآه من قبل خلال عمره كله."
