يقترح البعض أن أولئك الذين يدعمون تعليم مهارات التفكير، وخصوصًا التفكير الإبداعي، يميلون إلى ربط أنفسهم مع التقدميين. من الجدير بالذكر أن التباين الكبير في الآراء هنا ليس بالأمر المفيد أو الدقيق. أشار Wright(1977:196) إلى أن الفُروقات مُبالغ بها، حتى خلال ذروة الجدال حول أنماط التعليم ومنهجياته. وفي الوقت الذي كان فيه التفكير "التقدّمي" مُقتصرًا على أقسام التعليم في بعض الجامعات، كان ما يُفكّر به الأكاديميون، أو ما يقولونه، أو ما يكتبونه شيئًا، وكل ما يقوم به المُعلّمون أو يُطبّقونه في المدرسة كان شيئًا آخر. وبكل الأحوال، كان المعلمون الممارسون يميلون إلى اختيار موقف وسطي بين هذين النقيضين حتى لو كانوا يفضّلون كونهم أقرب عقائديًا إلى أحدهما دون الآخر.
تقوم العديد من التخصصات "الإبداعية" كالرقص أو الموسيقا على أسس من المهارات، والمعارف، والمفاهيم التي تطوّرت عن طريق الممارسة والتمرّن. ولهذا نجد طلاب "الباليه" على سبيل المثال يتدربون لمدة ست أو سبع ساعات يوميًا، على مدار ستة أيام في الأسبوع، بالإضافة إلى قيامهم بتمارين رياضية. ويستخدم المعلمون الجيدون منهجيات متوازنة، بما في ذلك التعليم المباشر، وتقديم مهام تعتمد على الاستقصاء، وتتطلب تعاونًا بين الطلاب، ومهارات حل المشكلات، وتفكيرًا إبداعيًا. نجد بأن أحد مظاهر تفكير الأطفال باعتباره "موضوعًا بحد ذاته" تتمثل في جذبه اهتمام مجموعات متنوعة، بمن في ذلك أخصائيي علم الأعصاب، وعلم النفس، وعلم الاجتماع، والطب، وعلماء الدين والاجتماع، والصحفيين، والأهالي، والتربويين؛ وذلك لاعتقاد كل منهم بأن لديه ما يُقدّمه في هذا المجال. وبالطبع يمتلك الأطفال منذ الصغر قدرًا من الوعي بعملية التفكير الخاصة بهم، وباستطاعتهم تقديم أفكار قيّمة حول الموضوع (Coltman et al., 2013).
