يعد هذا الكتاب واحداً من ثلاثة كتب للمؤلف نفسه تتناول الجوانب الكمية والنوعية في علم النفس، والكتابان الآخران هما: مقدمة لطرائق البحث في علم النفس، ومقدمة لحزمة البرامج الإحصائية في علم النفس. وقد سبق أن قام مترجم الكتاب الحالي بترجمة هذين الكتابين الآخرين أيضا. ويتناول الكتاب الحالي مجموعة كبيرة ومتنوعة من الأساليب الإحصائية التي يمكن استخدامها في تحليل البيانات الكمية (العددية) والبيانات النوعية (التصنيفية والرتيبة) لمتغير واحد ومتغيرين ومتغيرات متعددة.
وقد اهتم الكتاب بمناقشة تفصيلية لكل من هذه الأساليب، من حيث: المفاهيم والمصطلحات والمبادئ التي تتضمنها، وأغراض استخداماتها، وإطارها النظري وكيفية حسابها، وتفسير وتقرير نتائجها. ونظراً لأن الدارسين والباحثين يعتمدون بدرجة كبيرة في إجراء هذه الأساليب الإحصائية على برامج الحاسوب الجاهزة، فقد اهتم الكتاب بتقديم الخطوات الأساسية لحساب كل من هذه الأساليب باستخدام حزمة البرامج الإحصائية، من حيث : مدخلاتها، وتحليلها، ومخرجاتها بأنواع مختلفة من البيانات، وممثّلة تمثيلاً بصرياً (شاشات حاسوب)، إلى جانب كيفية حساب بعض هذه الأساليب يدوياً. واهتم الكتاب اهتماماً أساسياً بكيفية تفسير مخرجات الحاسوب لكل أسلوب إحصائي، وطريقة تقرير نتائجه.
ويتميز هذا الكتاب بأسلوب عرض تفصيلي بسيط يناسب الدارسين والباحثين المبتدئين، وبأقل قدر من التعقيدات والصيغ الرياضية. وأوضح الكتاب كثيراً من المفاهيم والمبادئ بأشكال بيانية، والخطوات الرئيسة لحساب كل أسلوب إحصائي بأشكال تخطيطية انسيابية. ويزخر الكتاب بنقاط تركيز، وأفكار مفتاحيه، وأمثلة من الأدبيات السيكلوجية. ويبدأ كل فصل بنظرة عامة عن محتوى الفصل، وينتهي بملخص أمثلة لبحوث منشورة في علم النفس تتعلق بما تناوله الفصل.
