By presenting this book about the Lebanese pound, I do not pretend to have achieved a flawless masterpiece. Numismatics, the art of collecting bills and coins, is a living science that is constantly evolving according to new discoveries of either currencies or documents. What makes it important is that, money, along with language and customs, binds people together.
This work is the result of numerous years of research, which were originally intended to perfect my own collection and not for the purpose of this book. In the process, I ransacked existing public archives and had the opportunity to explore the private collections of my peers and many enthusiasts who were generous enough to put them at my disposal; whether willingly or with gentle persuasion.
All this was done to uncover as many elements as possible of a complex puzzle whose pieces were scattered throughout places and time.
This task was indeed quite difficult for our issuing banks have changed their names, buildings, and management many times over, going back from the French mandate to the independent Lebanese state. Unfortunately, the Banque de Syrie, Banque de Syrie et du Grand Liban, and Banque de Syrie et du Liban. It only holds the currency issued since 1964, the day it took the destiny of our pound into its hands. My dearest wish is that the Banque du Liban (BDL) uses this outline to structure and expand its archive collection.
Lastly, I urge my readers to send me constructive criticism of my work as well as any new and original information that they might possess or come across.
