يدور الكتاب حول قصة طبيب أسنان حديث التخرج يكتشف أن مهنة طب الأسنان (أو الطب عمومًا) في مصر ما هو إلا مهنة إنسانية بحتة وأن المكسب المادي منها لا يتحقق إلا بعد مرور سنوات لبناء سمعة واكتساب مهارة في هذه المهنة، وأن الجملة الشهيرة "لما تخلص ثانوية عامة هاترتاح" ما هي إلا أسطورة ولا تمت بصلة للواقع المرير.
بناءًا على ذلك قرر الطبيب الشاب استغلال مهارته الأخرى والعمل بها، فهو فنان تشكيلي، ملحن ويجيد العزف على أكثر من آلة، يمارس رياضة الكيكبوكسينج وكاتب حديثًا.
يستمر الصراع بداخله بين شخصياته المتعددة إلى حد قد يصل إلى الجنون، فهل هو الطبيب كوالده ووالدته، أم الفنان، أم الملحن.
