Elle comporte un aspect cognitif: l’ l’étude la façon don’t les moyens d’expression d’une langue organisent la saisie du monde (sémantique).
Confrontée à une grande diversité dans le structures langues, elle s’efforce de dégager des constants dans le cadre d’une typologie.
