ينظر هذا الكتاب في بعض المفارقات في تطور الفكر الماركسي في هذه الفترة، حيث يبدأ بدراسة النمو الإستثنائي والمتنوع للمادية التاريخية في العالم الأنجلو - أمريكي، متشعباً في مجالات متعددة من التاريخ إلى الإقتصاد، ومن السياسة إلى الأدب، ومن علم الإجتماع إلى الفلسفة.
ولكن تلك السنوات نفسها شهدت أيضاً إنحساراً شديداً للتأثيرات الماركسية في الثقافات اللاتينية - في فرنسا أو إيطاليا - حيث كانت الماركسية قوية وراسخة تقليدياً.
وظهر جلياً أن منافساتها النظرية الرئيسة كانت عبارة عن صيغ متعاقبة من البنيوية وما بعد البنيوية.
ينتقد الكتاب ويقيّم الأبعاد الحقيقية لهذه المدرسة وتلك - متتبعاً أقصى ما توصلت إليه أعمال ليفي ستروس أو لاكان أو فوكو أو دريدا، أما في ألمانيا فقد كان العمل المتراكم لهابرماس، مع جذوره التي تعود إلى مدرسة فرانكفورت مهيمناً على المشهد النظري إلى حد كبير.
ولكن فلسفة هابرماس تكشف أيضاً عن صلات غير متوقعة مع أحدث الإتجاهات الباريسية السائدة، في تركيزها الموحد على التواصل؛ يتابع الكتاب إستكشاف الخلفية التاريخية للطبقة الدولية التي تصارع ضدها هذه المصائر المختلفة من الماركسية في الغرب، مع إهتمام خاص بالترابط بين مصير كل من الماوية والشيوعية الأوروبية، إذن، ما هي طبيعة العلاقة بين الماركسية كنظرية والإشتراكية كهدف؟...
تستعرض الخلاصة القضايا الأوسع التي تطرح على الحركة العمالية من خلال صعود حركة السلام وحركة تحرر المرأة، وتقترح مجموعة من الأولويات نحو المزيد من تطوير الفكر الماركسي في الثمانينيات.
