اختص الإمام علي بن أبي طالب من دون الصحابة رضي الله عنهم بصفات وخصال يعجز عن وصفها الواصفون ومن جملة ما اختص به بلاغة وبيان فهو سيد البلغاء وإمام الفصحاء، وإليه تعزى كل فضيلة. وقد عكف الشريف الرضي على تأليف كتاب يحتوي على "مختار كلام أمير المؤمنين علي رضي الله عنه في جميع فنون ومتشعبات غصونه" وقد سمي الكتاب "نهج البلاغة".
وفي هذا الكتاب يقدم المؤلف محاولة لتوضيح وتقريب وشرح بعض ما قاله الإمام علي رضي الله عنه في كتاب "نهج البلاغة" وبخاصة تلك الإرشادات والنصائح والتعاليم الطبيعة التي حواها، وهي في معظمها علوم طبية نافعة، كان الإمام علي يطرحها بصورة مبسطة قريبة إلى واقع الناس وإدراكهم الذهني، إذ لم يكن لدى الناس آنذاك استعداد عقلي لاستيعاب ودرك تلك العلوم وتقبلها. ولعل القارئ يجد في هذا الكتاب إرشاداً له للوقاية وعلاج الكثير من أمراض العصر العضوية والروحية.
