نهج البلاغة، كتاب ثمين يضم بين طياته مجموعة ثمينة من خطب الإمام علي ورسائله وكلماته، أمامها يقف الإنسان بخشوع وخضوع وإجلال وإكبار... إنها كلمات تحكي مبادئ رسالية وعقدة إلهية ومواقف وسخاء وشجاعة رجل متميز، وتحكي أيضاً حياة شعب وترسم صورة حقيقية لمجتمع عاش فيه الإمام وكان له ومن أجله هذا العطاء... وبالنظر للأهمية التي يحتلها هذا الكتاب فقد اعتنى السيد عباس علي الموسوي بشرحه محاولاً سد بعض الثغرات التي وقعت عند شراح هذا النهج فاهتم بالأمور التالية: أولاً: استوعب المعنى اللغوي بتمامه وكماله، ثانياً: قام بشرح كل مصطلح استعمله الإمام علي وهكذا بلغت الكلمات اللغوية التي شرحها أكثر من عشر آلاف كلمة في حين أن أعظم شراح النهج لم تزد كلماتهم المشروحة عن الخمسة آلاف إلا قليلاً، وقد أراد ذلك أن يوفر على قراء النهج من أبداء ومثقفين ما كان يحس بضرورته من حيث أنهم ربما فهموا من المعنى اللغوي إذا توفر لهم ما لم يفهمه أي شارح للنهج وبذلك ربما تتحرك العقول في الوصول إلى شيء جديد قد غاب عن الأولين. ثالثاً: تعمد شرح كل فقرة وبالتالي لم يتناول الخطبة أو الرسالة أو الكلمة بشكل مجمل، رابعاً تعمد الشرح بلغة سهلة تتوافق وأذواق الناس، خامساً: تجنب ما وقع فيه بعض الشراح من التطويل الممل والدخول في مباحث عقلية وأدبية وعقائدية وغيرها. سادساً: ترجم كل من توفر له ترجمته من شخصيات مرت في النهج ولكن بصورة مختصرة تتناسب وهذا الشرح.
