إنَّ من أصعب اللحظات التي يمرّ بها المؤرَّخون هي الفترات الإنتقالية، أو "المنعطفات التاريخيَّة"، إذ يضطر المؤرَّخ، طوعاً أو كرهاً، إلى أنّ يكتب تاريخ تلك الفترة تحت "سيف المنتصر"، وقد قِيلَ: "وَيل للمغلوب من المنتصر".
فمؤرَّخ بغداد الوحيد، بعد وفاة أستاذيه – ابن الدَّبَيثيّ، وابن النَّجَار – تاج الدَّين عليَّ بن أنجب، المعروف بابن السَّاعي، العاشق مدينته مدينة السَّلام عشق مؤرَّخها الأكبر الخطيب البَغّدَاديّ، والمحبّ لخلفائها العبَّاسيين، عاصر لحظة دخول هولاكو بغدادَ منتصراً سنة 656هــ = 1258م.
وكان ابن السَّاعي على علاقة طيبة بابن العَلَّقمي، ويحضر مجالسه فلا عضاضة أن يلجأ إليه ابن السَّاعي لما دخل التَّتَار بَغْدَادَ، ولا يظنن أحدُ أنَّه كان متواطئاً، فالرجل أعدم ابنه البكر على أيدي عساكر التَّتار.
