كان النظام الاقطاعى فى اوربا يدعو للتوسع والسيطرة والقتال. فلم تجد نفعاً فكرة سلام الله وهدنة الله، وما لجأت اليه الكنيسة من فرض قيود على المبارزات الفردية لم يؤدى الى نتيجة ايجابية، ولذا حرصت الكنيسة غلى تشجيع الفرسان على قتال المسلمين، فيشبع الفارس بذلك نزعته الحربية، وينال الخلاص والتطهير من الذنوب، وهو ما يرضى الجانب الروحى من طبيعته, يضاف الى ذلك ما حدث فى غرب اوربا من ازدياد عدد السكان، وتقاصر الاراضى عن سد حاجة المقطعين، فكان لابد من السعى للحصول على اقطاعات جديدة.
على أن نجاح الصلبيين اول الأمر لم يرجع ألى كثرة أعدادهم، بل يرجع اساساً الى تفرق كلمة المسلمين، وأدرك المسلمون آخر الأمر ان الصلبيين لم يستهدفوا إلامصلحتهم الخاصة، ولم يلبث فكرة الجهاد ان خرجت الى حيز التنفيذ، واشتد ثائرة المسلمين.
هذه هى الخطوط العريضة للجزء الاول من كتاب تاريخ الحروب الصليبية، الذى ألفه السير ستيفن رنسيمان، فى ثلاثة اجزاء نقلتها الى اللغة العربية.
ما اتصف به رسيمان من الصبر والدأب على الدراسة، والعلم الغزير، وسلامة العرض التاريخى، كل ذلك يتجلى فى كتابه "تاريخ الحروب الصليبية". فما اورده من وصف مثير للمعارك الطاحنة، والاطماع المتعارضة، وما كان من تأثيرها على التاريخ فى الشرق والغرب، كان من اهداف الؤلف.
والواقع ان ما بذله رسيمان من صدق الدراسة وما اشتهر به من سلامة الادراك، والسيطرة على كل ما يربط الشرق بالغرب من صلات، جعل لهذا الكتاب من المكانة العلمية ما شهد به المؤرخون والنقاد.
