العرفا قرية مصرية تختزل العالم بروحه وجسده وأعصابه، الدكان قلبها النابض الذي يدفع الدم في عروقها، فتتحرك الشخوص لتؤدي أدوارها ببراعة وحيوية. يلعب هذا المكان الصغير المتطفل على مدينة تسمى سماديس دراما إنسانية صاخبة أحيانًا وهامسة أحيانًا، وتتجسد تخومه ومشارفه في صور فنية مرسومة بعناية فائقة وحب جارف.
فالحقول ليست فقط للزراعة، لكنها أيضًا دلالة على العز، فيما تبقى البحيرة رمزًا للفقر والتحدي والغموض، الترعة كذلك مصدر الغموض والأساطير والمآسي. الشوارع الضيقة والحارات الخانقة تعكس المصير المقبض، وصعوبة الخلاص!
يحتدم صراع دائم مكتوم، يتفجر أحيانًا بين عناصر القرية من الصيادين والفلاحين. بين الحب الجامح للبطل المأزوم صاحب الدكان وقوانين المكان الصارمة، بين الحياة بقسوتها والإنسان البائس المجرد من الأسلحة، يخضع لدفتر الشكك في الدكان، وللعمدة في الدوار، وللحكومة تسوقه إلى الحرب فيموت دون أن يفهم! ويؤدي السرد الصاعد دورًا معتبرًا كأحد المشاركين في نسيج العمل الفني.
هنا تتوزع المشاعر والعواطف وتعرض على قارعة الطريق، لا شيء للاختباء، البيوت مفتوحة على مصاريعها وكذلك القلوب والضمائر. الفضائح والإخفاقات كلها على رفوف الدكان.
وأثناء إحباط البطل يصاب الوطن بالإحباط معه.
أطفال العرفا ليسوا سذجًا، بل يدركون كل ما يجري، ويمثلونه ليلًا في الساحة، ويؤدون دورًا كان معروفًا في الحضارات القديمة، هودور الكاهن العراف، فقد تنبأوا بما سيحدث في المستقبل ووضعوا نهايات يعجز عنها أكثر المؤلفين عبقرية!
