تقوم هذه الدراسة التي جاءت تحت عنوان "الصين المتغيرة" للباحثون "جون ثورنتون، ستيفاني كلين، أندرو سمول"، للإضاءة على المحادثات التي أجريت طوال الشهور الأربعة عشرة الأخيرة الماضية مع مجموعة عريضة من الصينيين، ومن ذلك أعضاء اللجنة المركزية للحزب الشيوعي الصيني، وهي المجموعة القيادية في الصين المكونة من 370 قائداً، وكبار المسؤولين الحكوميين، والعلماء، والقضاة، والمحامين، والصحفيي، وقادة المنظمات غير الحكومية.
وفي هذا السياق يطرح الكتاب إشكالية هامة وهي هل على الصين أن تأخذ بالديمقراطية حسب المفهوم الذي لها أنها تقدم رؤية جديدة، فكبار المسؤولين يشددون على وجوب المحافظة على قيادة الحزب الشيوعي الصيني عن طريق الشكل التداوي الذي يسمح للأفراد والجماعات بالمشاركة في اتخاذ القرارات، أكثر من "التنافس المفتوح والمتعدد الأحزاب على السلطة".
وبما أن الصين لا تتمتع بالديمقراطية اليوم، والحزب الشيوعي الصني يحتكر السلطة السياسية والبلاد تفتقر إلى حرمة التعبير والقضاء المستقل والصفات الأساسية الأخرى لنظام تعددي ليبرالي، فهل يستحمل السنوات القادمة تغييراً في الكيفية التي يفكر الجواب نجده في هذه الدراسة الهامة التي ألقت الأضواء على سياسة الصين الاقتصادية والسياسية ومواقفها من الدول الكبرى تجاه ما يسمى "بالدول المارقة" وخصوصاً أنها أي الصين قد تحولت في غضون عامين لا أكثر إلى لعب دور القوة المعرقلة عن عمد وإصرار وبنيت مواقف تضامنية مع دول العالم النامي لخلق توازن بين احتياجاتها المادية ومسؤولياتها بوصفها قوة كبرى، فهل ستنجح في لعب هذا الدور...
