يأتي هذا الكتاب استجابة للحاجة إلى كتابات غربية جادة عن الحضارة العربية الإسلامية لفهم التلاقح الثقافي والحضاري بين الإسلام والغرب، خصوصًا مع ازدياد المشاعر السلبية والتحامل الواسع ضد الإسلام والمسلمين بسبب جهل (أو تجاهل) كثيرين للدور الريادي للحضارة العربية الإسلامية في نهضة كثير من الحضارات والأمم والشعوب. ويسعى إلى تقديم كنز من المعلومات والمعارف عن الإنجازات الرائدة للحضارة الإسلامية، في محاولة جادة لإنصافها وإعادة الحقائق التاريخية إلى عصرها الذهبي، حين قدمت إسهامات مشرقة في مجالات كثيرة: الفنون والآداب والثقافة والعلوم والتكنولوجيا.
يرى الكتاب أن العلم جزء لا يتجزأ من الإسلام؛ فـ «المعرفة هي الإسلام»، حيث أعلت الحضارة الإسلامية شأن العلم والتعلم وأدواته، وشددت عليه، بدءًا من أول آية ولفظ نزل في القرآن: «اقرأ»، وذكر القرآن العلمَ 750 مرة. علاوة على أنه يسلط الضوء على دور النصوص المركزية في القرآن والأحاديث النبوية في خلق ثقافة التعلم واحترام المعرفة، ويحلل الأعمال اليونانية التي ترجمت إلى العربية واختيار المصطلحات المستخدمة.
