إن أهم ما دعت إليه الشريعة الإسلامية الغراء، بل وجميع الشرائع الإلهية، هو المحافظة على النفس البشرية، فحرمت الإعتداء عليها بأية صورة وجعلت قتلها من أكبر الذنوب والآثام، إلاّ بحق قدرّه الله تعالى في كتابه الكريم... قال تعالى: "ولا تقتلوا النفس التي حرم الله إلاّ بالحق".
كما قرر القرآن الكريم أن من قتل نفساً بغير حق، فكأنما قتل الناس جميعاً، وذلك لعظم ذنبه، وخطورة فعله، ولهذا كانت عقوبة القاتل في الشريعة عقوبة زاجرة رادعة، جاء الجزاء فيها من جنس العمل، القتل بالمثل، وبذا حفظت على الناس أرواحهم.
ولأهمية هذا الموضوع تناول هذا الكتاب الجناية على النفس البشرية وأحكامها في الشريعة مقارنة بين المذاهب الإسلامية، ثم بحث بالتفصيل القتل وأنواعه، والعقوبات المترتبة على كل نوع، مستمداً أحكام ذلك من كتاب الله الكريم وسنّة نبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم، وكتب التفسير، وأمهات الكتب الفقهية لكل مذهب من المذاهب، إضافة إلى الكتب الحديثة التي تناولت هذا الموضوع.
وجاء الكتاب وفق الخطة التدريسية المعتمدة لمقرر مساق التشريع الجنائي الإسلامي "عقوبات" حيث تناول فقه العقوبات، جرائم الحدود وعقوباتها وكان هذا في جرائم القتل والإعتداء على النفس البشرية وعقوباتها.
