بلغ نظام الأوقاف فى مصر درجة الاكتمال والنضج فى عصر سلاطين المماليك، ذلك أن هذا العصر بالذات يمثل دور القوة والثراء والازدهار الحضارى فى تاريخ مصر العصور الوسطى، واختار كثير من السلاطين والامراء والتجار وغيرهم أن يشاركوا بجزء من ثرواتهم فى النهوض بالمجتمع فأقاموا المؤسسات الخيرية المتنوعة وحبسوا عليها الاوقاف، بما يضمن الشروط العديدة لضمان حسن التصرف فى ريع تلك الاوقاف بما يضمن استمرار تلك المؤسسات فى تحقيق رسالتها. ولا شك فى أن دراسة هذا النظام فى ضوء تلك الحجج، تلقى أضواء جديدة قوية، لاعلى طبيعة نظام الوقف فحسب، بل أيضا على طبيعة المجتمع المصرى الاسلامى فى تلك العصور.
ومن الواضح أن هذه الدراسة لييست بالسهلة، نظرا لما تتطلبه من معرفة عميقة بروح العصر الذى تتناوله، ودراية واسعة بمصادر تاريخه وكيفية استخدامها، وخبرة واسعة فى قراءة الحجج الشرعية المعاصرة، لفك رموزها واستجلاء الجوانب الغامضة منها، واستكمال الالفاظ والعبارات المفقودة منها نتيجة لتأكل بعض أجرائها على مر القرون والسنوات، هذا كله بالاضافة إلى ما ينبغى أن يتحلى به الباحث فى مثل هذا الموضوع من حاسة تاريخية مرهفة تجعله قادرا على التقاط المعاني والافكار من بين السطور والربط بين ما جاء فى الحجج الشرعية المتباينة من خيوط متشابهة، ونقد ومقارنة ما جاء فيها من معلومات، ليقدم لنا فى النهاية صور متكاملة جديدة داخل اطار محدد ثابت لتاريخ الأوقاف.
