رغم كل آيات التوراة العديدة التي تحرّمها، فالذبائح البشريّة كانت جزءاً أساسيّاً من طقوس اليهوديّة القديمة: إنها واحدة من النتائج الحاسمة التي توصّلت إليها هذه الدراسة، وذبيحة يفتاح، أو تقديم ابنته الوحيدة البتول قرباناً، لم تكن حالة مفردة، أو شواذاً على القاعدة، بل كانت مثالاً لقاعدة متّبعة انقرضت بعد إصلاح الملك يوشيّا.
واليهود لم يختلفوا في ذلك عن عرب الجاهليّة وسائر الشعوب الساميّة المجاورة التي كانت تمارس هذه الطقوس.
ويضمّ هذا الكتاب نصوصاً من التلمود والمدارش وتاريخ يوسيفوس اليهودي وتفاسير كبار الحاخامات وآباء الكنيسة أكثرها يعرّب للمرّة الأولى من العبرية واللاتينية والآرامية وغيرها تتناول هذه الذبيحة البشريّة التي حيّرت العلماء والمفسّرين فتضاربت آراؤهم في تأويلها، كما يدرس إمتداداتها الميثولوجيّة عند الإغريق وعرب الجاهليّة والسامرين وغيرهم.
كما يترجم ويدرس نصوصاً أدبية غربيّة أستوحت من قصّة بنت يفتاح شعراً وملاحم ومآسي، ويفرد باباً خاصّاً لآثار الأدباء اللبنانيين في الموضوع: أمين صليبا، الخورأسقف يوسف الحايك، سعيد عقل في مسرحيّته الشهيرة، بولس سلامه في قصيدته الملحميّة، والأخوان رحباني في جبال الصوّان، أعمال شعرية وأدبيّة وسمتها مأساة بنت يفتاح البيبلية بطابعها.
