ولتعريف ماهيّة الرّياضة ومعناها تحديداً، يقدم لنا كونر هيكلاً كاملاً للرياضات، عازلاً عناصرها الجوهريّة وشارحاً إياها، بما في ذلك مساحات الرّياضة المميّزة، وطبيعة زمن ممارسة الرّياضة، وأهمية الأدوات الرّياضيّة، مثل المضارب والكرات، وطرائق الحركة في الريّاضة، ودور القواعد والحظ، والمعنى الحقيقي للغش والفوز.
