«يقول لنفسه أحياناً إنّه كان يمكن أن يكون من الفلّاقة. فهو يفهم ماذا يعني ألّا يتمكّن فلّاح من زراعة أرضه. يعرف ماذا يعني الفقر. حتّى لو قال له بعضهم إنّنا هنا من أجلهم، وإنّنا جئنا لنَهَبهم المدنيّة والسّلام. أجل. ولكنّه يفكّر في أمّه وفي البقرات في الحقول... فكّر في ما أخبروه به عن الاحتلال، ومهما حاول لم يكن قادراً على الامتناع عن التفكير والقول لنفسه إنّ وجودنا هنا مشابه لوجود الألمان عندنا وإنّنا لسنا بأفضل من منهم».
تدور هذه الرواية حول مأساة عشرات الآلاف من الفتْية الفرنسيّين. أُرسِل برنار ورابو وفيفرييه للمساهمة في حرب الجزائر في 1960 وعادوا منها بعد سنتين. أسكتوا في داخلهم صوت الذكريات وسعَوا إلى عيش حياتهم. لكن تكفي أحياناً مناسبة بسيطة، حفل عيدِ ميلاد في الشتاء أو هديّة تستقرّ في عمق الجيب، لينبعث الماضي بعد أربعين عاماً في حياةِ من حسبوا أنّهم أفلحوا في نسيانه. هي أيضاً مأساة الجزائريّين، وكارثة الاستعمار المدوّية، وأذى الحروب. .
