تدور أحداث الرواية بين ليبيا والسودان، لتحيلنا إلى مرثية، لا لشخصيات الحافلة التى ضلت الطريق، بل مرثية لجيل الألفية الثانية، وما يتكبده من مشاق الغربة فى ليبيا فى ظل اضطهاد النظام للسودانيين. تتباين مستويات لغة الرواية، التى جاءت على خلفية الأحداث التى مرت بها الذات الساردة. مجموعة من السودانيين بعد ترحيلهم من ليبيا يسافرون على شاحنة عبر الصحراء ويضل بهم السائق عن الطريق الذى يوصلهم قرب الحدود السودانية، حتى تتعطل الشاحنة تماما.. ينفد الماء والزاد، فيرسلون أحدهم للبحث عن نجدة، ولكنه لا يعود.. هنا تبدأ المأساة، الأطفال يصرخون جوعا وعطشا، الموت يشير بأصابعه نحوهم، يتلقفهم واحدا تلو الآخر. بطل الرواية (أسامة سعيد) يقاوم الموت بتـنشيط ذاكرته التى تحكى لنا ما حدث، مراوحا بين حبيبته، التى يخاف أن يموت قبل أن يلقاها، وبين الواقع بتكنيك درامى ومونتاج متوازى.
