يستعرض الكتاب الأسس الفكرية والفقهية لنظرية التطرف في المرجعية الإسلامية، بدءًا من ابن تيمية والمحيط الاجتماعي والسياسي الذي قاده لتدشين توجّه فكري وفقهي مغالٍ في التشدّد، ومتتبّعًا للنقلات التاريخية والمفصلية التي عبر عليها المنتج الفقهي الإسلامي في أزماته ومنعطفاته. ويتناول في عشرون فصلاً – بشكل وافٍ وضافٍ – كل ما يخص أحد تجلّيات هذا التطرّف والتشدّد المستند إلى رؤى ميتافيزيقية ومرويّات مسحوبة على القداسة، ليبدأ الكتاب عبر فصوله الممتدة في التأصيل لنشأة تنظيم الدولة الإسلامية في العراق والشام «داعش»، بدءًا من المرحلة التالية للغزو الأمريكي للعراق وإسقاط نظام الرئيس العراقي الأسبق صدام حسين، وتأسيس عديد من التنظيمات والحركات والجماعات المسلحة، المرتكزة على أسس فقهية ودينية في تحركها وفعلها في المجال العام، والتي شكّلت نواة التنظيم ومبتدأ خطواته، قبل توسّعه في الداخل العراقي، وفي الأراضي السورية – عقب اندلاع انتفاضة الشعب السوري في مارس من العام 2011 – وصولاً إلى شكل التنظيم الحالي.
ويكشف الكتاب جوانب التنظيم هيكليًّا وتنظيميًّا، وأهم قادته ومراحله المفصلية، ونزاعاته الداخلية، واقتصاده وموارده، وعلاقاته الخارجية بالدول والحكومات وبعض التنظيمات الإرهابية الأخرى، إضافة إلى ممارساته وجرائمه التي ارتكبها بحق الشعبين العراقي والسوري، وما أحدثه عبر خططه ومدوّنته الحركية والفكرية من تغيُّر جذريّ عميق الفعل والتأثير في بنيتي المجتمعين وأسسهما الفكرية والتنظيمية.
