تندرج رواية "المد الهائل" ضمن أدب الخيال العلمي، وقد نشرها "ألكسندر كي" عام 1970، وهي تحكي قصة كونان، صبي يعيش بمفرده على جزيرة صغيرة بعد أن أحالت الحرب العالمية الثالثة الأرض دماراً بفعل الأسلحة المغناطيسية، حينها انقلبت محاور الكرة الأرضية، وغَرِقَت القارات في المحيط، ولم يبقَ منها سوى بضع جزر صغيرة.
بعد أن نجا كونان من تلك الكارثة المؤلمة التي حلت بالأرض، وجد نفسه في عالم جديد مختلف تماماً عن العالم الذي عرفه من قبل.
تنتقل أحداث الرواية بين عالَمي كونان ولانا عقب إنتهاء الحرب المُدَمِرة، كان كونان يعيش وحيداً في جزيرة نائية، ولانا تعيش في "هاي هاربور" مع خالتها مزال وعمها الطبيب "شان" زوج "مزال".
بعد مرور خمس سنوات على النجاة، يعثر طاقم سفينة النظام الجديد على الجزيرة التي يقيم فيها كونان، وقد ناهز السابعة عشرة حينها، فيسوقونه أسيراً إلى مدينة "إندستريا" للعمل فيها وخدمة المسؤولين عنها.
يلتقي هناك ب "تيتشر" المتخفي بشخصية باتش، الرجل العجوز الذي يصنع القوارب في "إندستريا"، ويجيد التواصل عن بُعد مع ابنته "مزال"، وقد تعمّد "تيتشر" إخفاء اسمه الحقيقي، "برياك روا"، ذلك أن قادة النظام الجديد في بحث مستمر عنه، بغية أَسْرِه والحصول على ما لديه من معارف لإعادة ابتكار التكنولوجيا التي كان العالم القديم يمتلكها.
