لم أقصد بهذا الكتاب أن أقدم من ورائه لقرائي درساً علمياً موضوعياً يستقرأ حركة فنون النثر الحديث فى أدبنا العربي، على نحو يكشف عن العوامل التى أثرت فى نشأتها ونموها وتطورها، وعن مراحل هذا التطور ومظاهرة وتجلياته الأدبية، وعلاقته بالمرجعييات الفلسفية والاجتماعية والعلمية والسياسية التى ترتبط به.
وإنما يسعى على نحو مباشر إلى استعراض ألوان من النثر الحديث فى الأدب العربي، وأن يعرف القارئ بأهم مراحل تطوره فى صورة يسيرة متأنية. ومن ثم رأيت أن اقسمه على مدخل وثلاثة فصول. كالتلى: المدخل الوعاء الحضارى، الفصل الأول فى فن المقال الأدبي، الفصل الثانى فى تناول المسرحية.. أما الثالث فيختص بفن القصة.
