موضوع المرأة في المصادر التاريخية في العصر الإسلامية من الموضوعات الشائعة والنادرة، بسبب التقاليد الشرقية المحافظة، لاسيما ما يتعلق بالحياة العائلية والمنزلية والاجتماعية، الأمر الذي قصر الكلام عن المرأة في العصر المملوكي في هذه المصادر على نساء أفراد المماليك دون غيرهم. وهو ما يتطلب جهداً مضاعفاً من الباحث للحصول على مادته التاريخية من مختلف المراجع التاريخية والجغرافية والأدبية والتراجم.
وقد استطاع الدكتور "أحمد عبد الرزاق" رسم صورة تاريخية مماثلة للمرأة في العصر المملوكي-الذي يعد أزهى عصور مصر الإسلامية-غطت جوانب حياتها في هذا العصر الذي امتد قرنين ونصف من الزمان (1250-1517)، فتناول هذا الكتاب المهم مكانة المرأة في هذا العصر المملوكي، ودورها في الحياة العامة، وبين مدى ما وصل إليه سلطانها ونفوذها، وتطرق إلى موضوع الزواج، والأسرة وزينة المرأة، كل ذلك في أسلوب علمي جزل وسهل يهيئ للقارئ التغلغل إلى أحشاء المجتمع المملوكي في ذلك العصر بيسر واستمتاع.
