تناول هذا الكتاب تاريخ المسجد الأقصى في عصر دولة المماليك، وما صاحب ذلك من نهضة عمرانية وعلمية نفردها بالنقاط التالية: 1- لقد أسس المماليك دولة إسلامية مترامية الأطراف شملت مصر وبلاد الشام. وامتد حكمهم على مدى قرنين ونصف من الزمن، تخلل هذه الفترة مراحل من الجهاد للدفاع عن الدين والأرض ضد الأخطار التي هددت المنطقة من جانب الصليبيين والمغول.
2- إن عصر سلاطين دولة المماليك يُمثِّل مرحلة جديدة تماماً في تاريخ مدينة بيت المقدس، لها طابعها الخاص الذي يتصف بالأمن والاستقرار، وهو ما لم يتوفر لها في العهد الأيوبي، فضلاً عن الثراء والازدهار، مما جعل بيت المقدس عنصراً إيجابياً وفعالاً في الحياة الإسلامية.
3- يُعدُّ قيام دولة سلاطين المماليك عند منتصف القرن السابع للهجرة – الثالث عشر للميلاد – مؤشراً يشير إلى بداية مرحلة جديدة لها طابعها الخاص في تاريخ الشرق الأدنى بوجه عام، وفي تاريخ مصر والشام بوجه خاص.
4- لقد مارس المماليك نشاطاً دينياً وعلمياً خصباً صحب انتقال الخلافة العباسية من بغداد إلى القاهرة، ظهر أثره جلياً في مصر والشام، من خلال إحياء شعائر الدين، وإقامة المنشآت الدينية، وكذلك المنشآت التعليمية، والإقبال على التعليم والتأليف والكتابة.
5- نال المسجد الأقصى نصيباً وافراً من النشاط العلمي والديني في عصر دولة المماليك وهو ما حاولنا إبرازه في هذا الكتاب.
