النَّوْمُ مُعجِزةٌ مِن مُعجِزاتِ الحَياةِ التي تَتكرَّرُ كلَّ يَوْم، وفِي هَذَا الكِتاب، يَسْرُدُ العالِمُ «فريزر هاريس» العَدِيدَ مِنَ الأَبْحاثِ والخَواطِرِ حوْلَ هَذِه الظَّاهِرةِ الطَّبيعيَّة.
يُعرِّفُ الكاتِبُ النَّوْمَ بحَالةِ «اللَّاوَعْيِ الطَّبِيعيَّةِ» التي يَصِلُ إلَيْها الشَّخصُ السَّلِيمُ ويَحْتاجُ إلَيْها مِن أجْلِ استِمرارِيَّةِ حَياتِه بشَكْلٍ صِحِّي، مُشِيرًا إلى أنَّ هُناكَ قَواعِدَ أَساسِيَّةً يَجِبُ اتِّبَاعُها للحُصولِ عَلى نَوْمٍ عَمِيق.
كَما يَذْكُرُ الكاتِبُ تَارِيخَ النَّومِ في كُلِّ العُصورِ؛ حَيثُ اعتقَدَ البَعْضُ قَدِيمًا أنَّ حَالةَ النَّوْمِ تَنطَوِي عَلى مَعانٍ عَظِيمةٍ سامِيَة.
يَبدأُ الفَصلُ الأوَّلُ بشَرحٍ وافٍ عَنِ الأَرَقِ وأَسْبابِه، ثُمَّ يَنتقِلُ في الفُصولِ التالِيةِ إلى التَّحدُّثِ عَنِ الأَحْلامِ ومُستقبَلِ النَّوْمِ في العَصْرِ الحَدِيث؛ فارِضًا احْتِمالاتٍ للقَواعِدِ التِي قَد تَضَعُها المُدُنُ مِن أَجْلِ إنْشاءِ بِنَاياتٍ عازِلةٍ للأَصْوات، تَضمَنُ الهُدوءَ، وتُوفِّرُ النَّوْمَ السَّلِيمَ لِقَاطِنِيها.
