ويعد هذا الكتاب من الكتب التي أفردت للحديث عن فضائل الشام ومآثرها التي نوه العلماء بها, ونشروا شمائلها, وجمعوا أخبارها, ودونوا محاسنها, فالأحاديث الشريفة في فضائل الشام كثيرة, أولا تكفينا دعوة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بالبركة في الشام, فقال: (اللهم بارك لنا في شامنا؟).
واستفاد المؤلف مما سبق من المؤلفات فجمع شعث ما تفرق, ولم شمل ما تناثر هنا وهناك. ويبين الكتاب حدود الشام وتسميتها وتقسيمها, والآيات الواردة في فضلها, وكذلك الأحاديث النبوية, وفيما جاء في فضل الشام من كلام السلف, وفي ذكر جبل قاسيون, في فضل الجامع الأموي, في ذكر من مات في بلدة دمشق الشام, وفي ذكر نبذة من أشعار أهل العصر المنظومة في محاسن دمشق ومنتنزهاتها.
