يعد سعديا الفيومي أحد أهم فلاسفة اليهود خلال العصر الإسلامي عامة والقرن الثالث الهجري على وجه الخصوص، وفي الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يقدم سعديا تفسيراً لأسفار التوراة الخمسة (التكوين، الخروج، اللاويين، العدد، التثنية). ويمكن اعتبار هذا الكتاب شكلاً من أشكال الترجمة التفسيرية للنصوص، وفي هذه الترجمة كان على سعديا الذي عاش في ظل ازدهار الحضارة الإسلامية حينها اعتبار العقل أحد أهم خصائص الحضارة الإسلامية.
وقد أثر علم سعديا بالديانة اليهودية، وتأثره الكبير بالثقافة العربية الإسلامية وعلماء الكلام، وعلمه الواسع بالنحو العبري، فضلاً عن تمتعه بحس ديني ولغوي - في أن تأتي هذه الترجمة معبرة عن المضامين الدينية التي تضمنها النص العبري. ومن مميزات هذه الترجمة كذلك أنها أول ترجمة من النص العبري مباشرة، وذلك عكس الترجمات المسيحية التي تمت عبر الترجمة السبعينية (اليونانية) والترجمة اللاتينية. ومن مميزات هذه الترجمة أيضاً أنها تجنبت الحرفية إلى حد كبير وهو ما جعل صاحبها يستخدم عنوان "تفسير التوراة بالعربية" وربما كان هذا العنوان إشارة ضمنية منه لصعوبة ترجمة النصوص الدينية.
وتتجلى آثار الحضارة العربية الإسلامية واضحة في الترجمة التي بين أيدينا على المستويين اللغوي والديني، فقد آثر سعديا استخدام ألفاظ عربية تناسب عقلية البيئة التي يعيش فيها، أو استعارة النص القرآني في بعض الأحيان، أو ترجمة أسماء الأماكن بما كانت تعرف به في عصره. وتجلى ذلك الأثر أيضاً في تجنبه لصفات التجسيد والتشبيه عند وصف الإله وهو أمر كان جديداً على العقلية اليهودية في ذلك الوقت، إن الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا هو خير دليل على أن الجانب الأكبر من النتاج الديني والأدبي والفلسفي لليهود خلال العصر الإسلامي هو جزء أصيل لا يمكن فصله عما أنتجته الحضارة الإسلامية.
