أحداث القصة تدور في جوّ ريفي ، يتميز بالبساطة والعفوية والصدق والإخلاص والقناعة ، شبيهٍ بالجو الذي نشأ فيه المنفلوطي بمصر؛ على خلاف حياة المدينة القائمة على الخداع والكذب والغش والنفاق ، حيث يتهافت الناس على جمع المال دون مراعاة أبسط المبادئ والقيم الخلقية
والرواية تحاول التأكيد على أنَّ الخلاف الحاد بين بيئة القرية و بيئة المدينة ، يؤدي إلى خلاف أكثر حدّة بين مفهومين للسعادة : أحدهما يعتبرأنَّ السعادة هي نتيجة نجاح المرء في التلاؤم والتكيُّف مع الظروف الواقعية التي تحيط به، والمفهوم الآخر يعتبرأن المال هو مفتاح السعادة أياً كانت الوسائل المستخدمة في الحصول عليه. وللرواية اسمٌ آخر هو "تحت ظلال الزيزفون"
