اختار الدكتور جورج سعاده المقالة الأدبيّة ليخوض موضوعات شتّى على شيء من الحساسية عندما تتعلّق بالوطن والمصير والتاريخ والتقاليد والذاكرة الفرديّة والجماعيّة والدين والإيمان والحبّ والجمال.
وعندما أخذ الدكتور سعادة في التجوال على هذه المواضيع بما تحتويه من الإنفعالية والعاطفة والقلق وكذلك من الفرح والسلام، تجمّعت المقالات الواحدة تلو الأخرى إمتداداً لمعاناة فكريّة وجدانيّة، إذ إنّها جاءت قراءة للواقع الإجتماعي الوطني الإنساني كما هو في مختلف أحواله وطموحاته وأزماته.
والأديب الدكتور سعادة الذي اختار أيضاً أن يقف على مشارف "خريف العمر" فيستعيد بعض الماضي بحنطته وزؤانه فيرى فيه بعداً وازناً وقيمة ثمينة، من دون أن يصنع من هذا الماضي أمراً مثاليّاً، إلاّ أنّ إقامة الميزان ما بين الأمس واليوم، يكشف لمن عاش عصر المبادلة والمعاونة أنّ الإنسان دخل عصراً جديداً هو عصر التجارة بكلّ شيء ومن أجل كلّ شيء.
إلاّ أنّ تشاؤميّة الدكتور سعاده ليست مطلقة بل هي تحذيريّة لأولئك الذين جعلوا من الإنسان ومنتوجاته الفكريّة والأخلاقيّة مادّة للإستهلاك ليس إلاّ، إنّه يرى رؤية اليقين "أنّ لا شيء تافهاً في هذا الوجود، وأنّ لكلّ موجود علّة ونهاية".
وعليه، فقد حفل الكتاب برؤية نقديّة إجتماعيّة، تناولت حالات مختلفة لوجهين حضاريَّين هما: الريف وتراثه، والعولمة وجديدها.
