الكتاب هو من أهم الكتب التي أُلِّفَتْ في الحب ومنفعته، والذي قال عنه مؤلفه: "يصلح لسائر الناس دعون على الدنيا والدين". وقد جعل الكتاب بالطرائف الأدبية، النثرية والشعرية، التي تعبر عن فنون الغزل بأنواعه المختلفة مع ما يخالطها من الوعظ الديني المرتبط بالعديد من المسائل الفقهية التي تروع انجراف المحب نحو المسالك الخطرة والتشبث بالحب الصافي الذي لا يكون إلا إذا قاد إلى حب الله عز وجل. وفي الكتاب أيضاً وصف شامل لأنواع المحبة المختلفة التي سردها المؤلف.
وقد قام المؤلف بتقسيم الكتاب إلى تسعة وعشرين باباً، استهلها بالتعريف بأسماء المحبة، وأنهاها بذم الهوى وما في مخالفته من نيل المنى. ونظراً لأهمية هذا الكتاب فقد خرج بحلة جديدة معاصرة حيث خرّج المحقق الآيات والأحاديث، وعلق على الكلمات الغريبة، مع تصحيح ما ثبت خطأه من العبارات والكلمات، وتفسير ما غمض منها بما يفيد منه القارئ.
هو كتاب في وصف الحب وأحواله، ذكر فيه المؤلف قصص الحب وأحواله وطبقاته حتى رقى به إلى أسمى الأخلاق الإنسانية، مع ذكر للجمال وسره متوخيا العفة والأدب بما يرقى بالفكر والأخلاق إلى مرحلة الكمال . وقد ضمنه الكثير من الأشعار المتعلقة بالموضوع فجاء الكتاب راقيا في موضوعه وراقيا في أسلوبه وقد تم تحقيقه زيادة في الفائدة.
