المرأة ضحية دائمة للعنف في جميع حضارات البشر السابقة، وحتى الراهنة، ولا سيما في المجتمعات التي لم تستكمل قطيعة الحدائة، وفي مقدمتها المجتمعات العربية والإسلاميَة.
وإذا كان الإضطهاد هو العلامة الفارقة لوضع المرأة في هذه المجتمعات فإنه يندر ألا يأخذ هذا الإضطهاد طابعاً عنفياً أو ألا يقوم على جذر من العنف على شكل دوائر متشابكة ومتلاحمة منصهرة في شبه كتلة صماء، تحيط بالمرأة من كل جانب لدرجة تبدو وكأنها في موقع النواة من هذه الكتلة.
ولئن كان يعرض الكاتب لشتى دوائر العنف الجسدي والعنف الجنسي والعنف الإجتماعي، وحتى العنف الذاتي الذي لا يندر أن تمارسه المرأة بحق نفسها على سبيل رد الفعل المازوخي كلا منها على حدة، فإنه لا يراها دوائر منفصلة، بل هي متداخلة ومتحددة المركز تؤلف بمجموعها انعكاساً لثقافة عنفية قارة في مجتمع محكوم يعقل إيماني يتناقض مع قيم المساواة والحرية.
إن كان العنف ضد المرأة هو في المقام الأول من طبيعة ثقافية ووليد البنية التحتية الذهنية التي تصدر عنها المجتمعات العربية والإسلامية بجملتها. فمن المحتم أن يتمظهر على الأصعدة الإجتماعية والإقتصادية والسياسية كافة على شكل دوائر إستبعاد صارم للمرأة من جميع ميادين الحقل العام، وحتى الخاص، وليؤسسها في دونية ثابتة ومتعددة الأشكال ليس من شأنها إلا أن تزيد الدوائر إنغلاقاً عليها.
