يجب أن أعترف أولًا أنها كانت مفاجأة سارة وتكريمًا عظيمًا لي، عندما اتصلت بي السيدة/ أماني أبو رحمة وأخبرتني أنها قد قامت بترجمة هذه المادة إلى العربية، وأنها ترغب في نشرها في كتاب. ولأن تركيزي- بوصفي دارسًا في الأدب المقارن- منصب بشكل كامل تقريبًا على الثقافة الأنجلو أوروبية، وأشعر بصعوبة بالغة في الكتابة عن أي شيء خارج هذا المجال، فإنني أشعر بكثير من الفخر أن أكتشف أن نظريتي العامة الموسومة بـ(الأدائية) قد وجدت اهتمامًا في ذلك الجزء الناطق بالعربية من العالم. وآمل- بالرغم من ضيق قاعدتها الثقافية، أن تكون مصدر إلهام للقراء.
وبالرغم من وجود وعي عام أن الأمور تتغير في الثقافة، وأن تقانات ما بعد الحداثة أصبحت مستنفدة ومرهقة ومتوقعة، إلا أن الاهتمام الرسمي بمعالجة مواضيع الحقبة الجديدة التي ستحل محل ما بعد الحداثة، أو تحديد نظرية جديدة تحل محل ما بعد البنيوية كان ضئيلًا للغاية. وهكذا وحتى كتابة هذه السطور عام 2012، نجد باإضافة إلى الأدائية جملة من المقترحات تحاول توصيف المرحلة الجديدة من قبيل (الحداثة الرقمية)، و(الحداثة المتذبذبة) و(الحداثة المغايرة) و(عصر ما بعد الألفية). ومن المؤسف أيضًا أن أيًا من هذه المصطلحات لم يحقق توظيفًا شائعًا أو حتى مناقشة جادة في الدوائر الأكاديمية. ولكني واثق تمامًا أن هذه المناقشة ستحدث. ولكن من المرجح أن يحدث ذلك على أيدي الشباب الذين لم يخضعوا لتأثير ما بعد البنيوية، والمنفتحين على تقبل الآراء والأفكار الجديدة. وأملي أن تساهم هذه المقالات في تعزيز تلك المناقشات الموعودة.
