عرف الأدب العربي من أفانين القول في الشعر والنثر والخطابة والترسل والحكمة والمثل ما اتشح به تاريخه الطويل بياناً وبهاءً، وبلاغة وفصاحة، وجمالاً وإمتاعاً. وكان لتنوع هذه الفنون أثر كبير فيما وصل إليه هذا الأدب من رفعة ومكانة لا تكاد تدانيها مكانة. على أن أكبر الأثر في هذه المنزلة والمكانة إنما يعود إلى ذلك النوع الذي شرَّف الله به العربية وآدابها نسجت على آداب الدنيا قاطبة وهو القرآن الكريم، كلام الله المبين، وآيته المعجزة.
وهذه الرسائل التي يضمها هذا الكتاب تنتمي إلى فن جمع هذه الفنون كلها، وهو فن المقامة، ولعله من أطرف فنون الأدب وأغناها، إذ يتنقل قارئه فيه بين ألوان الأدب حتى لا يكاد يخلف واحدة منها، فما شاء القارئ من نثر وشعر وقرآن وحديث ومثل وحكمة... يجمع ذلك كله ويؤلف بينه كلام مسجوع نمّقه صاحبه حتى بلغ الغاية أو كاد.
أما مضمون هذه الرسائل فينتظمه خيط واحد يجمع بينها وهو المفاخرات التي تتنوع بتنوع المقامات. ففي المقامة الأولى مفاخرة بين الماء والهواء، وفي الثانية مفاخرة بين الشمس والقمر، وفي الثالثة مفاخرة بين الأرض والسماء، وفي الرابعة مفاخرة بين الليل والنهار، وفي الخامسة مفاخرة بين الغربة والإقامة، وفي المقامة السادسة-وهي الأخيرة-مفاخرة بين العلم والجهل، وقد تمّ تصدير كل مفخرة بترجمة عن صاحبها.
حوى هذا الكتاب مجموعة رسائل تنتمي إلى فن المقامة، وهو من أطرف فنون الأدب وأغناها، إذ ينتقل فيه قارئه بين ألوان الأدب حتى لا يكاد يُخلِف واحدة منها، فما شئت من نثر وشعر.. وقرآن وحديث.. ومثل وحكمة.. يجمع ذلك كله ويؤلف بينه كلام مسجوع تنوَّق فيه أصحابه حتى بلغ الغاية أو كاد.
