أدّى الغزو الفرنسي إلى مصر؛ إلى إشعال الشغف الوطني بكل ما يتعلق بتاريخ مصر القديم "الفرعوني"، فنابليون لم يأتِ لغزو مصر فقط، بل جلب معه أكثر من150 عالمًا، من رسامي الخرائط، والفنانين، وعلماء الطبيعة، وحتى المتخصصين في الموسيقى والرسامين؛ ليقوموا برصد تفاصيل المواقع القديمة، والعادات الموجودة، وكانت النتيجة العمل الضخم "وصف مصر"، الذي نُشر في الفترة بين عامي 1809 – 1829م، في عشرين مُجلدًا، يضم حوالي 900 نقش.
كان من بين هؤلاء الرسامين المهرة آدم فرانسوا جومار(1777- 1862م) Edme François Jomard، الذي كان له الفضل الأكبر في تحرير كتاب وصف مصر بأجزائه، وقد ساهم في الكتاب بالعديد من الرسومات المميزة للأثار المصرية وعلم النباتات، وأنواع الأسماك، والخرائط في كلٍ من إسنا، ودندرة، وأهرامات الجيزة، وأسيوط، والفيوم، والإسكندرية، وبعض المحافظات الأخرى، وقد ساهم جومار في إخراج أول صورة فوتوغرافية تمّ اِلتقاطها في مصر بنهاية عام 1839م.
أعرب العالم الفرنسي فرانسوا أراجو(1786 – 1853م)François Arago عن أسفه؛ لأنّ التصوير الفوتوغرافي لم يكن قد اُخترع بعد، حين قال"سيتخيل الجميع المزايا غير العادية التي يمكن استخلاصها من وسيلة دقيقة للغاية وسريعة، أثناء "الحملة الاستكشافية إلى مصر" – على حد قوله – كما استطرد وهو يُعلن في باريس في 7 يناير 1839م، عن اختراع التصوير الفوتوغرافي الذي صَممه "لويس چاك مانديه داجير (1787 – 1851م) Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre "لنسخ الملايين من الحروف الهيروغليفية التي تُغطي السطح الخارجي للآثار العظيمة في طيبة، وممفيس، والكرنك، وغيرها، ستحتاج إلى عقود من الزمن وجحافل من الرسامين، لكن مع اختراع داجير، يكفي شخص واحد للقيام بذلك.
