هذا البحث يتناول سياسة المغول الإيلخانيين تجاه دولة المماليك في مصر والشام زمن الإيلخان أبي سعيد بن خدابنده حيث كانت علاقات المغول الإيلخانيين بالمماليك في تلك الفترة تشكل بعداً حضارياً جديداً في حياة الشعوب الإسلامية بصفة عامة والعناصر المغولية في الشرق الإسلامي بصفة خاصة ويتضح ذلك فيما نلمسه عند دراسة أحوال هذه العناصر في مرحلتين زمنيتين مختلفتين وغير متماثلتين من حيث الظروف التاريخية وأحداثها السياسية والعقائدية والاجتماعية.
وقد قسمت هذا البحث إلى ثلاثة مباحث يسبقها مقدمة، وتمهيد. وفي النهاية تأتي الخاتمة.
تناولت المقدمة أهمية الموضوع، والمنهج المتبع في دراسته.
وتناول التمهيد: قيام دولة المغول الإيلخانيين في إيران والعراق مستغلين في ذلك حالة الضعف التي ألمت بالمسلمين آنذاك.
وتناول المبحث الأول: العلاقات بين المغول الإيلخانيين والمماليك قبل أبي سعيد، وبين أن الإيلخانيين قد تحالفوا مع البابوية والغرب المسيحي ضد المماليك، وبخاصة في عهود أباقا وأرغون وبايدو، ورغم اعتناق المغول الإسلام فإن سياستهم العدائية للمماليك استمرت حتى زمن خدابنده والد أبي سعيد.
وتناول المبحث الثاني: سياسة المغول الإيلخانيين تجاه دولة المماليك في زمن أبي سعيد، ويبين هذا المبحث أن الإيلخانيين قد نجحوا في التحالف مع المماليك زمن أبي سعيد وأهملوا التحالف القائم بينهم وبين البابوية والغرب المسيحي فلقى هذا التحالف الإخفاق الكامل، وكان للتعاون بين الإيلخانيين والمماليك نتائجه الطيبة والمثمرة على كل من الدولتين.
وتناول المبحث الثالث: أثر الاتصال المغولي المملوكي على الحياة الاجتماعية والثقافية وفيه يبين هذا المبحث أهم التحولات الحضارية التي تكشف عن تأثر كل من المغول والمماليك ببعضهم البعض ويتضح ذلك فيما نلمسه من مظاهر حضارية لدى الطرفين ظهر أثرها في حياتهم الاجتماعية والثقافية.
