كشفت الثورات كثيراً من المثقفين، الذين كتبوا حول الديموقراطية والإستبداد، وملأوا الدنيا بصراخهم ضد قمع الحريات وسلب الحقوق، وإنخفاض مستوى التنمية وتبدد التطلعات إلى النهضة الحقيقية أو تزييف مقوماتها سلوكياً، وغيرها من المطالبات التي نادى بها كثير من المثقفين في مؤلفاتهم وندواتهم.
وعند قيام الثورات انكشفت حقيقية الكثير منهم، وبانت إرتباطاتهم من جهة، وزيف دعاواهم من جهة أخرى، فبعضهم تحالف مع السلطة ضد المجتمع وتطلعاته الإصلاحية، وبعضهم خان وطنه تحت شعار التغيير والإصلاح من خلال تعامله مع الغرب كحكومات ومنظمات مخترقة من إستخباراتها، ومع السفارات الغربية سواء بقصد أو بغير قصد، أي بسذاجة لا يمكن تقبلها ممن يدعي أنه مثقف، وبعضهم حاول تسلق الثوار لتحقيق مواقع متقدمة له في مراكز الدولة ومؤسساتها.
ونتيجة الظروف الميدانية والمتغيرات الإجتماعية، نشهد تبدلاً في دلالات مصطلح المثقف، وتغييراً في وظيفته وأدواته، لذلك تتطلب هذه التطورات مواكبة موازية لمصطلح المثقف، وإعادة النظر في دلالاته ووظيفته، لمراكمتها على كل ما تم التنظير له سابقاً، كون المواكبة من سمات مراعاة الزمان والمكان، خصوصاً مع تبدل ظروف الواقع، ووقوع أحداث كشفت اللثام عن تطورات في بنية المثقف الفكرية والعقلية، انعكست على سلوكه.
فجاء هذا الكتاب إطلالة سريعة على التطورات التي حدثت في بنية مفهوم المثقف ودلالاته، وفي بنيته المعرفية، وفي علاقاته بكل من المؤسسة الدينية والمجتمع والسلطة.
