من أجل تحديد سبب الحريق وأصله، ينبغي الإلمام والدراية بعدة مجالات، مثل كيمياء النار وسلوكها، وتركيبات الأبنية والمواد الداخلة فيها، والحرائق العائدة لأسباب عَرَضية أو متعمدة، والإلمام بمفردات وأساسيات لغة النار (مصطلحات الحريق)، كذلك الخبرة التراكمية في التحقيق في أسباب الحرائق، من الخبرة الذاتية أو الإستفادة من خبرات المحققين الآخرين، سواء بشكل مباشر أو من خلال مؤلفاتهم ومذكراتهم.
ينبغي التعامل مع موقع الحريق بطريقة منتظمة، وخطوات مرتبة، وقبل الإقرار بل منشأ الحريق هو حرق عمد جنائي، ينبغي إستبعاد الأسباب الأخرى العَرَضية المحتملة لمثل هذا الحريق، (وهو لا شك عمل مرهق للمحقق)، حتى لو وجودت أدلة تفيد بغير الأسباب العَرَضية.
في حالة الشك بإستخدام مواد مسرعة في منطقة بداية الحريق، وتأكدت هذه الشكوك عند إرسال عينات من هذه المنطقة إلى المختبر، إلا أنه أحياناً قد تسأل هيئة المحكمة المحقق فيما إذا تم التأكد، من خلال خبرته ومعاينة الموقع، بإستبعاد، وكيفية إستبعاد، أي سبب عَرَضي محتمل، قبل الإقرار بأن هذا الحريق هو عمدي.
أما تحديد مسؤولية الحرق العمد فيُقرّر من قِبل هيئة المحكمة، حسب الأدلة التي أمامها (والتي تقدم لها من أكثر من جهة ومصدر)، وحسب قناعة القاضي أيضاً، تتضمن الأسباب العَرَضية المحتملة لنشوب حريق كثير من الحالات مثل: عيب أو خلل كهربائي، أو بتمديدات وتجهيزات التزود بالغاز أو المشتقات النفطية، او مشكلات فنية في غرفة التدفئة، أو إهمال في التدخين، أو أعمال إعداد الطعام (الطهي)، أو صيانة غير ملائمة لأجهزة التدفئة والطهي المنزلية أو موقد النار أو الخشب، كذلك عبث أطفال أو حيوانات منزلية أليفة (قطط - كلاب...)، أو تجميع أشعة الشمس بشكل عفوي (غير متعمد)، على مواد قابلة للإشتعال.
