وُلدَ في بيروت عام 1930 .
في العام 1950 ، نال شهادة 'بكالوريوس علوم' في الأدب والتاريخ من الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت، وشهادة أستاذ في العلوم من الجامعة نفسها عام 1953 .
إلى جانب نشاطه التعليمي في الجامعة، وفي الإنترناشيونال كولدج التي احتلّ فيها موقع مدير الدروس العربية، صدرت للكاتب، حامل وسام الأرز الوطني اللبناني، مؤلّفات متنوّعة منها: 'الرائد'، وهو معجم لغوي أدبي نال عنه جائزة أصدقاء الكتاب في لبنان عام 1965 ، و 'المحيط في أدب البكالوريا' في جزئَين، و 'لبنان والنهضة العربية الحديثة'، و 'وليّ الدين يكن'، و 'جدّتي'، وغيرها.

حين وضع جبران مسعود "الرائد"، نَهَلَ من القديم الأَصالة التي لا تخبو حيويّتها مهما تغيّر الزمن. واختار من الجديد كلَّ ما يجعل هذا القاموس مواكباً لتطوُّر آداب اللغة العربيّة وعلومها. واليوم ما زالت الحاجة قائمة إلى وجوده بين أيدي طلّاب العربيّة ودارسيها من مختلف المشارب، ومدارسها ومعاهدها في أنحاء العالم العربيّ. ذلك على الرغم من التطوّرات، ومن هيمنة الوسائل التكنولوجيّة؛ فالقاموس قيمة لا تتأثّر بخفوت طاقةٍ وزوال إرسال.
وإدراكاً منّا لأَهمِّيَّة هذا المفهوم الذي اتَّخذه الأستاذ جبران مسعود على مدى سنوات، جئنا بهذه الطبعة المُنقَّحة بإشرافه، لنقدِّم «رائد الطلَّاب» بميزاته القديمة التي جعلته رائداً، وبحلَّة جديدة؛ فقد أَبقينا على الترتيب الأَبجديِّ للكلمات وفق حروفها الأُولى، والَّذي يُعَدُّ الرَّائد أوّل معتمديه.
كما حافظنا على الكثير من الشروحات المُتعارف عليها في المعاجم التقليديَّة الموثوقة. لكنّنا أضفنا شُروحات وأَمثلة ومداخلَ حديثة مسايرة للعصر، وأضفنا لوحات موسوعيَّة تربويَّة، غنيَّة بأَلوانٍ وصورٍ معاصرة تتناول مواضيع مختلفة عن الفنِّ والثقافة والعلوم وغيرها. من ناحية ثانية، زوّدنا المعجم بفصل لغويّ نحويّ يعين السائل في قضايا كثيرة.
نفخر بإعادة وضع هذا الكتاب الموسوعي مجدّداً بين أيدي محتاجيه، ونشعر بثقة أنّه مواكِبٌ دائم لهذه اللغة: حضوراً وتطوّراً وجمالا.
