يتوجه هذا المعجم إلى المشتغلين بالدراسات العربية، ليكون لهم مرجعاً ميسراً في المسائل التقليدية الكثيرة الدوران في الدراسات اللغوية الثانوية والجامعية. وقد اختيرت مواد كل فن من أوثق المصادر فيه، في العصور التي تم فيها نضج العلوم العربية.
ففي النحو الصرف اعتمد ابن هشام الذي شهد له ابن خلدون بأهه "أنحى من سيبويه" وكفى بابن خلدون شاهداً، وفي المعاني والبيان والبديع اخترت من كلام الخطيب التبريزي في الإيضتح، وأمثال هذين الأمامين، وأخذت من كلام المعاصرين في فقه اللغة والنقد الأدبي، إذ إن أبحاثهم فيهما أتم. وأضف إلى ذلك كثيراً من المسائل النادرة، وما يعسر الوصول إليه، من بعض المراجع المنثورة. وقد ذكر فيه أدوات المعاني من الحروف وأشباهها وبينت أحكامها بالتفصيل، بالإضافة إلى لأبواب علوم اللغة ومصطلحاتها.
