"زبده التفسير هو مختصر لتفسير الإمام الشوكاني المسمى "فتح القدير الجامع بين فنيّ الدراية والرواية في علم التفسير". وتفسير الإمام الشوكاني هذا هو من خير ما أنتجته قرائح العباقرة في بيان معاني الكتاب العزيز، فإن مؤلفه كان من خيار حملة علم الدين القويم، فقد جمع بين العلم بالكتاب المبين، والبصيرة في سنة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، والفقه في الشريعة وأحكام الدين، وأتقن فروع الفقه وأصوله، واللغة وعلومها، ومارس الفتي والقضاء، مع إتباعٍ لمنهج السلف الصالح في العمل والاعتقاد، جمع هذا مع روحٍ وثابة، وحماس قلّ نظيره، في النصح لقومه أهل اليمن وللمسلمين، ودعوتهم إلى الحق الصريح، وتنفيرهم من العقائد المنحرفة، والبدع المضلّة، عزف عن التقليد، ولم يرقى لنفس أقلّ من الاجتهاد والتحقيق، وكان له في الاجتهاد والتحقيق جولات موفقة، وحملات مسددة، يشهد بذلك ما خلقه الإمام الشوكاني من مؤلفات في العلوم الإسلامية بصورة عامة ومؤلف في تفسير القرآن الكريم، بصورة خاصة، حيث جاء تفسيره شاهداً على كل ذلك، وتركزت نظراته الثاقبة، ومواهبه العالية.
ونظراً لأهمية هذا التفسير عمد الدكتور محمد سليمان عبد الله الأشقر إلى اختصاره، وذلك لتقريب النفع به لعامة المسلمين، فاختصره على قول واحد في تفسير الآية غالباً، والذي هو أولى الأقوال بالصحة، وأقربها إلى المعنى المتباد من الآية دون تكلف، متجاوزاً التحليل اللغوي، ذاكراً ومباشرة المعنى الذي تؤول إليه الآية، ومقتصراً عند اختلاف القراءات على التفسير الموافق لقراءة مفصل، وآخذاً من قسم الدراية، دون قسم الرواية، إذ كان الإمام الشوكاني يدخل في قسم الدراية حاصل معنى المرويات التي يجمعها في آخر بحثه، إلا أن صاحب هذا المختصر كان يركن إلى ذكر قليل من المرويات مما رأى له ميزة خاصة في جلاء معنى الآية.
وحرصنا على تعميم الاستفادة، وتقريب النفع بهذا التفسير لغير المتخصص ثم تجنب، قدر الطاقة، التعبيرات الاصطلاحية اللغوية والمنطقية، وغيرها من الاصطلاحات الفنية، وربما زيد على كلام الأصل، مع الإشارة إلى ذلك، ما كان بحاجة ماسة لذكره.
